so, as you might have guessed, I have a few reservations... I'll summarize my opinions here, as the discussion yesterday as a bit unstructured and i dont know if everyone has seen it. Id like to preface this by admitting that i find the idea submitter to be a bit overbearing to put it diplomatically, not to mention that he just started using this system without telling anyone, changing and removing other peoples bookmarks, uncluding the folder holding our statics. while this may have impacted my initial readction to this proposal, i will try to be objective. (he has already reinstalled this system in the c3, even though im pretty sure nothing has been officially decided yet, this reeks of "i want to do everything my way"). So if i try to summarize what "problems" this system is trying to solve: * Finding which WH connects to what system * Finding what scanned sigs are in what system * Having a better nomenclature than "the c3" when talking about systems The rest (like sorting being "better") seems highly subjective and dependant on how you have your interface setup. I agree that being able to find which system connects to which via which hole is a real problem that we have today, but my understanding is that pathfinder can already gather this information, and while I'm not an expert in pathfinder, I suspect that we will get more out of the tool if we use it the way it's intended (like finding routes between HS systems via our WH network etc). It does force you to use pathfinder, but so does this naming scheme. With regards to finding out which scanned sig is in which system, I'm not sure that has really been a problem so far, but as we grow it might absolutely become one. Again, my understanding is that pathfinder can hold this information, so why not use it? The naming scheme is already 100% dependant on pathfinder. And when it comes to using the naming scheme to designate holes and connections, this might have worked if we were not using comms, but trying to hear the differance between AB (pronounced aybee), AC (pronounced aysee), AD (pronounced aydee), AE (pronounced ayee) on discord with several people talking and lots of background noise is absolutely terrible. We used it while the Frenchies in the next door hole was camping us, and it was almost impossible to hear the difference without constantly asking for things to be repeated. This will get even worse when we get into ABAE, AABE, AEBE etc. So to be a bit constructive, here is my proposal: Use pathfinder to solve the first two bullets, and use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_phonetic_alphabet or something to name the systems in pathfinder. These are picked and refined over 100 years to be easy to say for people with different linguistic background and to sound distinct from each other. As for renaming the "exits" to something that starts with a dot doesn't make any sense to me. If you are looking to warp away quickly you want to warp to your safe, as the exit might be camped. There are lots of ways to make sure your safe is on top of your list, depending on your local setup.
